Upper thoracic and shoulder mobility: overhead with dowel

Shoulder and thoracic mobility exercise for overhead movement, using a stick or dowel.

  • Holding a dowel with both hands, at least double-shoulder width apart to start
  • raise the dowel above your head, keeping the shoulders and chest open and relatively relaxed
  • take care not to over extend from the thoracolumbar region, as only the upper thorax and shoulders should create the movement
  • incorporate deep breathing to further work on thoracic mobility
  • repeat as needed (can move through the range or hold at certain ranges)
